Prof. Dr Muhammad Yusuf AwanWelcome to the fastest grown UMT School of Architecture and Planning (SAP) with quality education in the historic city of Lahore. The SAP is currently offering Six programs, three undergraduate (B. Arch, BS-CRP and BLA) and three graduate programs (M. Arch, MS-Housing and Community Development and PhD Architecture). All programs are fully accredited by the National accrediting council, Pakistan Council of Architects and Town Planners (PCATP) and in line with quality requirements of Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan.

Welcome to learn from the unique environment where you will find highly qualified and experienced faculty, qualified in diversified specializations of Architecture. The faculty has PhD and Master level qualifications from renowned universities of whole World, i.e. from UK, USA, Switzerland, Turkey, Malaysia, AIT, Germany, Sweden and others. Currently the SAP is equipped with faculty of 34 full time members with 6 PhDs, 16 Foreign Masters and others local Masters. We believe “Quality Matters” and we are committed to provide and maintain quality education with curriculum meeting international requirements and delivered through highly qualified faculty with diversified experiences in planning, design, construction, conservation, urban design, GIS, renewable energy, sustainability, green architecture and tropical architecture.

The SAP started with just one program of B. Arch in 2012 with only seven students and five faculty members. Through dedicated efforts of faculty, clarity of thought and comprehensive understanding of the goals of education required in the field of built environment, however, with full support of UMT’s visionary leadership, it reached the level within only seven years to be able to offer six programs under two departments; Architecture and City and Regional Planning, currently 34 full time faculty and more than 550 students. This has been achieved through frequent national and international conferences and guest lectures by renowned architects and planners. The SAP also fully focusses on research activities and has launched a research journal “Journal of Art, Architecture and Built Environment (JAABE)” under the requirements of HEC.

Thus, Studies in Architecture and Planning cover every aspect of human life comprehensively. These include social, cultural and technological aspects. It analyses the major contribution made by ancient civilizations and architecture produced during earlier times. It thoroughly considers on-going trends in the present world and possible directions leading towards developments in future.

Architecture is a process and product of planning, design and construction of buildings and other structures and the relevant ambiance. It demands creativity and clarity of thought based on sustainable considerations for future. The students are taught and trained to meet the current challenges. The courses of reading deal with architectural skills, both manual and through use of relevant computer soft wares/ programs. It emphasizes on an innovative and deeper understanding of various materials used in construction of unique structures. The studies highly focus on theory, philosophy and history of architecture and built environment. All kinds of environmental issues are studied and analyzed which include social, psychological, physical and cultural.

The students are required to have more and more knowledge for innovative ideas. They are taught that Knowledge is power and that power is gained through discussion, debate and expression of one’s own original observations. Architecture is different. It cannot be taught through dictation. It is learnt with dedication and commitment. The teachers are resource persons and play a role of motivation and inspiration. Architecture and Planning are the fields where students are required to be creative, innovative and logical to produce masterpieces of architecture and city spaces so they are recognized, loved and honored by the whole world.
