Ar Dr Muhammad Yusuf Awan

Dr. Awan has over 40 years of experience in teaching, research and administration. He had earlier served as a Chairman, Coordinator Undergraduate, Director post graduate programs of the Department of Architecture, Chairman Proctorial Board and Advisor Foreign Students at the University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore. He is PhD in Architecture from the UK’s renowned university of Sheffield. His particular specialization is in Conservation of Architectural and Cultural Heritage. Dr. Awan is a senior member of the Institute of Architects Pakistan (IAP) and served as Honorary Secretary and Vice Chairman of IAP Lahore Chapter. In the year 2010 he played key role as Deputy Convener in organizing the Architecture Students’ Jamboree as a part of 14th Asian Congress of Architects (ACA- 14) where students and architects of 17 Asian countries participated.

Dr. Awan has supervised more than 500 undergraduate Thesis projects of Bachelor’s Degree of Architecture. He has also supervised 31Thesis of Masters of Architecture, 29 at the UET and two at the UMT that were all successfully completed. Number of Dr. Awan’s research publications including postgraduate thesis is 50. Dr. Awan is not only a senior registered member of Pakistan Council of Architects and Town Planners (PCATP) but he has been nominated by PCATP as Inspector for evaluation and accreditation of Bachelor’s program of Architecture at several universities and institutions in Pakistan. The Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) has also selected him as expert of its undergraduate program of B.Sc. in Building and Architectural Engineering.

He had also launched postgraduate programs of Master of Architecture (M. Arch), M. Arch. with Specialization in Architectural Conservation, M. Arch. with Specialization in Urban Design and PhD in Architecture from the Fall Semester 2013.

Considering the meaningful academic developments, the UMT Board of Governors (BOG) upgraded the department into a School of Architecture and Planning (SAP) in June 2015 which is now an important academic entity of the UMT and Dr. Awan was appointed as first Dean of the SAP.

Dr. Najma Kabir is a skilled and qualified educational professional with 29 years of field and 16 years of teaching experience at University and College levels. As an Architect Designer, she has worked on the design and execution of numerous residential and commercial projects.

As an administrator, she has worked as Head of Architecture Department at University of South Asia, Lahore for over fifteen years. During these years she developed the curriculum and teach-ware for the Department of Architecture following the guidelines laid by PCATP and HEC. She is a member of numerous Architectural Organizations. Embedded with the passion to revolutionize the Architectural Education in Pakistan, and has taught Architectural Design, History of Architecture, Architectural Drawing, Architectural Conservation and above all, supervised around 300 thesis projects of Bachelors of Architecture. She has also taught as Visiting Lecturer at Beacon House National University, (BNU) and University of Engineering and Technology, City and Regional Planning (CRP) Department, Lahore. Her passion to educate has always convinced her to participate in pedagogic workshops like OBE (Outcome Based Education), seminars and strived to initiate, facilitate and manage the departmental needs through wide range of stake holders, like IAP, PCATP, and BAE.

As a Researcher, she has published many Research Articles in national and international research journals. Her area of research being, “Contribution of British Architects in Colonial India, Materials used for Conservation in Mughal Buildings, Geotechnical properties and Stratigraphy of Soils. Geometrical Analysis of Wazir Khan Mosque, Architectural identity of Lahore city, etc. She has also been honored to work as Consultant for Mughal Heritage in Pakistan for the Organization of MHF (Mughal Heritage Fund.) as Material Analyst.

Ar. Dr. Mansoor Ahmed

Dr. Mansoor Ahmed is a licensed Architect and seasoned Academician. He graduated from the prestigious National College of Arts, Lahore in 2004 and earned his doctoral degree from Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey in 2018. Dr. Mansoor’s PhD dissertation is an enquiry into the hybrid Indian modernity which he concluded by bringing in comparison the post-independence planned capital cities Chandigarh and Islamabad. The dissertation contains first hand archival materials from Doxiadis Archives (Athens), Fondation Le Corbusier (Paris), Edward Durrell Stone Papers (Arkansas, U.S.A.). During the course of his PhD, he presented papers in prestigious conferences around the world which includes Political Imagination and the City, Santiago, Chile (2016), Urban and Architectural Translations in Modern Asia, Hong Kong (2016), ICOMOS-GA, New-Delhi, India (2017) and Design Pedagogies: Analyzing current trends and shaping the future, Islamabad, Pakistan (2018).

He also served at the key positions in internationally renowned Architectural and Construction practices and has a portfolio of projects executed across Pakistan, Turkey, Middle East and Africa. He is familiar with international standards of design and construction. His diverse portfolio comprises of corporate offices, banks, Mosques, hotels, high-rise, mixed use, cultural and educational buildings, and modular housing (in disaster prone areas). His current research is focused on the interrogation of nationalism and hybrid modernity through critically analyzing the architecture and urban development in connection with Post-Colonial Theory, New Islamic Architecture, Identity, New Nation States, Spatial politics and Power.

 

Ar. Dr. Saima Gulzar

Dr. Gulzar has over 18 years of experience in the field of Architecture in different capacities in addition to her particular contribution in the Architectural research and publications. She had earlier served as Chairperson Department of Architecture, UMT Lahore. She is a POSTDOC in Architectural Conservation-a multidisciplinary venture of the World’s ranked university ETH-Zurich (Q.S World Rankings No.7). Her particular specialization is in the Scientific Conservation of Built Heritage as the present day conservation of cultural heritage is the knowledge backed by all the technical, scientific and artistic disciplines. She presented her doctoral and post-doctoral research in different conferences all around the globe (USA, UK, Europe, and ASIA). Dr. Gulzar is also a life member of Pakistan Council of Architects and Planners (PCATP) and Institute of Architects (IAP). Dr. Gulzar also facilitated PCATP in various accreditation visits and activities for raising the standard of architecture education in Pakistan.

Dr. Gulzar has supervised more than 150 undergraduate Thesis projects of Bachelor’s Degree of Architecture. She has also supervised 3 Thesis of Masters of Architecture with the research publications in HEC recognized journals to attain the highest quality of research. She is presently engaged in the supervision of 3 Thesis of Masters of Architecture and 3 Thesis of the PhD in Architecture.

Dr. Gulzar is a HEC Approved Supervisor and has authored many research papers in the Impact Factor Journals in addition to the HEC recognized journals. Presently, she is serving as the Director Graduate Studies. She initiated the Research Colloquium in School of Architecture and Planning-UMT. She also launched the Journal of Art, Architecture and Built Environment to propagate the quality research in the discipline of Architecture.
