Curriculum and Course of Reading

The curriculum is designed to focus on design and depth and breadth of knowledge of architecture in continuation of Bachelor of Architecture. This includes special emphasis on Urban Design, Architectural Conservation, Socially responsive, Sustainable and Energy Efficient Architecture with appropriate consideration of future needs. The studies help in gaining more confidence and maturity to play a leading role in national and international projects of architecture, planning and various issues of the built environment.

Academic Standards

The world that we live in is increasingly becoming competitive, particularly in the field of technological developments. The program of architecture is designed to meet the highest academic standards to meet the upcoming challenges. The subject covers the required depth and breadth of the discipline.

Library Resources

The UMT library is well equipped with the variety of books related to the social, cultural, technological and other aspect of life. The department is fully aware of the requirements of its higher degree programs. In anticipation to the need, the Department keeps on adding books in the library as required by the programs.

Administration /Organization

The board of studies (BoS) is the main academic body of the department. It mainly administers the undergraduate program of B. Arch. For higher degrees, a Department Graduate Committee (DGC) is formed. The DGC is aimed to regularly review and enhance the program according to the criteria of the HEC. It is mainly aimed to improve the quality of education and research culture. The DGC also aims to invite the academia with higher qualification and experience of teaching and research to further improve and standards. The DGC recommends to the School Graduate Committee (SGC) and the Board of Faculty (BoF) for further improvement and incorporation of superior ideas and suggestions.

Support Resources

The major requirement of higher program is suitable faculty with higher qualification, advance knowledge, and experience. In addition, support and feedback is required from the professional firms. Being located in Lahore, the second largest city and the cultural heart of the country, a number of leading firms of architecture are accessible.

A person with high intellect and knowledge are invited to share their experience. Therefore, extension lectures, workshops and seminars are regularly organized. There is another important source of knowledge available in Lahore as it is a historical laboratory of the built environment of continues centuries with most valuable information.

Career Prospects

Candidates with higher qualification are needed in architectural firms. They are preferred to be hired as teaching and research faculty for both undergraduate and postgraduate education.

This degree will open up access to jobs in multinational and national companies which need highly skilled persons in planning, design and construction.

Cooperative Institutions

The Department is in close contact with other institutions of Lahore. The interaction with other schools in Lahore and other settlements of country is frequent. The level of cooperation is also very high and quick.

Diversity

The course design for the degree of Master and PhD in Architecture are highly diversified. They include the areas of built heritage, architectural conservation, urban design and planning, construction management, energy efficient architecture, earthquake architecture, advance structures, building services and advance presentation skills.

Masters’ Degree of Architecture

The following Masters’ degree of Architecture with specialization and without specialization mentioned as 1, 2, and 3, are offered with pre-requisite bachelor degrees mentioned earlier duly recognized by Higher Education  Commission (HEC) of Pakistan and relevant professional councils such as Pakistan Council of Architecture and Town Planners (PCATP) and Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC).

Eligibility / Pre-requisite Qualification:

(A) Bachelor of Architecture (B. Arch) accredited by PCATP

(B) Bachelor of Science  in City and Regional Planning (B.Sc. CRP) accredited by PCATP

(C) Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (B.Sc. Civil Engineering) accredited  by PEC

(D) Bachelor of Building and Architectural Engineering accredited by PEC

(E)  Bachelor of Environmental Engineering accredited by PEC

(F)  Bachelor of Product and Industrial Design

(G) Bachelor of Islamic Architecture

DEGREE OPTIONS:

1.         Master of Architecture (M.ARCH)

2.         Master of Architecture with specialization in Conservation

3.         Master of Architecture with specialization in Urban Design

COURSE REQUIREMENTS FOR MASTER DEGREES

All Master and MS degrees offered at the School are with Thesis and every student will study at least nine subjects of three semester credit hours each and a Thesis of six semester credit hours.

Out of required nine courses six are core courses and other three are elective courses as given in the courses of reading.

A total of 33 credit hours are required to be successfully completed for award of M. Arch. Degree.

Pre-requisite subjects are to be followed as given in Courses of Reading.

Thesis for Master of Architecture will be on a topic related to any area of architecture, whereas Thesis for Master of Architecture in Conservation and Master of Architecture in Urban Design will be related to relevant areas of study. All Thesis proposals are required to be approved by the School Graduate Committee (SGC).

Thesis is to be evaluated/ approved by External and Internal Examiner.

The Dean of the School is authorized to offer a subject/ subjects on the basis of available faculty and/or the number of students admitted.

PhD in Architecture


The PhD Degree in Architecture at  the School of Architecture and Planning (SAP) is offered with pre-requisite Master degrees mentioned below which must be duly accredited by The Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan following the requirements set by the HEC..

Eligibility / Pre-requisite Qualification:

  1. Master of Architecture (M. Arch) accredited by PCATP
  2. Master of Science  in City and Regional Planning (B.Sc. CRP) accredited by PCATP
  3. Master of Building and Architectural Engineering accredited by PEC


COURSE REQUIREMENTS FOR PhD DEGREE
PhD degree in Architecture is offered at the School in compliance to HEC Criteria.
