Mission:

The mission is to enhance the knowledge of the students to meet the current and future needs of the nation in the field of built environment of our settlements. The students are required to be equipped with knowledge of advanced skills, latest technology used in the construction and its management. They need to be fully aware of the current world, new trends and direction of the developments in future.  

Academic Standards:

The current world is not isolated. It is day by day coming more and more, closer to one another, particularly in the field of technological developments. Therefore it is a world of competition which is becoming hard day by day. Therefore the programs of architecture are designed to meet the highest academic standards to meet the upcoming challenges. The subjects cover the required depths and breadths to gain the confidence and maturity.

Library Resources:

The Library of the UMT is well equipped with the variety of books related to the areas of social, cultural, technological and other aspects of life. The Department is fully aware of the need of its higher degree programs and therefore in anticipation to the need keep on adding books in library as required for these programs.

Administration/Organization:

The Board of Studies (BOS) is the main academic body of the department. It mainly administers the undergraduate program of B. Arch. For higher degrees a Post Graduate Research Committee (PGRC) is being formed. The PGRC is aimed to regularly review and enhance the program according to the criteria of the HEC. It is mainly aimed to improve the quality of education and research culture. The PGRC also aims to invite academia with higher qualification and experience of teaching and research to further improve the standards. The PGRC recommends to the Board of Faculty for further improvement and incorporation of superior ideas and suggestions. 

Support Resources:

The major requirement of the higher programs is the suitable faculty with higher qualification, advanced knowledge and experience. In addition it requires support from the professional firms and their feed-back. Being located in Lahore, the second largest city and the cultural heart of the country, a number of leading firms of architecture are accessible. The persons with high intellect and knowledge are to be invited to share their experience. Therefore extension lectures, workshops and seminars are comfortably organized. There is another important source of knowledge available at Lahore is its being a historical laboratory of the built environment of continuous centuries with most valuable information.

Facilities:

The infrastructure and other related facilities are available at the UMT.

Need and Demand/ Career Prospects:

The curriculum is designed to focus on depth and breadth of knowledge of architecture in continuation of Bachelor of Architecture. This includes special emphasis on Urban Design, Architectural Conservation, Socially Responsive, Sustainable and Energy Efficient Architecture with appropriate considerations of future needs. The studies help in gaining more confidence and maturity to play a leading role in National and International projects of architecture, planning and various issues of the Built Environment.

The candidates with higher qualifications are highly needed in architectural firms. They are preferred to be hired as teaching and research faculty for both undergraduate and postgraduate education. This degree will open up access to jobs in multinational and national companies which need highly skilled persons in Planning, Design and construction.

Cooperating Institutions:

The Department is in close contact with other institutions of Lahore. The interaction with other schools at Lahore and at other settlements of country is frequent. The level of cooperation is also very high and quick.

Diversity:

The courses designed for the degrees of Master and PhD in Architecture are highly diversified. They include the areas of built heritage, architectural conservation, urban design and planning, construction management, energy efficient architecture, Earth quake architecture, advanced structures, building services and advanced Presentation skills.

Masters’ Degrees of Architecture:

The following Masters’ Degrees of Architecture with specialization and without specialization mentioned as 1, 2, and 3, are offered with pre-requisite bachelor degrees mentioned below which must be duly accredited by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan and the relevant professional councils such as Pakistan Council of Architects and Town Planners (PCATP) and Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC).

Eligibility / Pre-requisite Qualification

(a) Bachelor of Architecture (B. Arch) accredited by PCATP or

(b) Bachelor of Science in City and Regional Planning (BSc CRP) accredited by PCATP or

(c) Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (BSc Civil Engineering) accredited by PEC or

(d) Bachelor of Building and Architectural Engineering accredited by PEC or

(e) Bachelor of Environmental Engineering accredited by PEC

MA Criteria

2.5/4.0 CGPA or 50% in annual system

GAT General 50%

1.Master of Architecture (M. Arch)

2.Master of Architecture (M. Arch) with specialization in Architectural Conservation

3.Master of Architecture (M. Arch) with specialization in Urban Design

4.Master of Housing and Community Development (MSHCD)

1. Course Requirements for M. Arch Degree

(a) Every student will study at least nine subjects of three semester credit hours each and a thesis of six semester credit hours.

(b) A total of 33 credit hours are required to be successfully completed for the award of M. Arch. Degree.

(c) Pre-requisite subjects are to be followed as given in Courses of Reading.

(d) Thesis is to be evaluated/ approved by External and Internal Examiner.

2.Course Requirements for M. Arch Degree (with Specialization in Architectural Conservation)

(a) Every student will study at least nine subjects of three semester credit hours each and a thesis of six semester credit hours, on some aspect/topic related to the Heritage Conservation.

(b) Out of nine subjects, four subjects with course numbers AR-604(Architectural Heritage of Pakistan), AR-624(Conservation of Architectural Heritage), AR- 625 (Conservation of Urban Built Heritage) and AR- 626 (Legislation and Conservation of Cultural Heritage) are compulsory.

(c) A total of 33 credit hours are required to be successfully completed for award of M. Arch. Degree.

(d) Thesis on Architectural Heritage and Conservation must be evaluated/ approved by External and Internal Examiner.

3.Course Requirements for M. Arch Degree (with Specialization in Urban Design)

(a) Every student will study at least nine subjects of three credit hours each and a thesis on some aspect/topic related to Urban Design

(b) Out of nine subjects, four subjects with course numbers AR-607 (Urban Design Studio -1), AR-608 (History of Urban Form), AR-627 (Urban Design Studio -11) and AR-628 (Understanding Urban Settlements) are compulsory

(c) A total of 33 credit hours are required to be successfully completed for the award of M. Arch. Degree

(d) Thesis on Urban Design must be evaluated/ approved by External and Internal Examiner

Important Note: The Chairman of the Department is authorized to offer a subject/ subjects on the basis of available faculty and/or the number of students admitted.

4. Course Requirements for MSHCD Degree Master of Housing and Community Development (MSHCD)

(a) Every student will study at least nine subjects of three semester credit hours each and a Thesis of six semester credit hours.

(b) A total of 33 credit hours are required to be successfully completed for award of MSHCD Degree.

(c) Pre-requisite subjects are to be followed as given in Courses of Reading.

(d) Thesis is to be evaluated/ approved by External and Internal Examiner.

Note: Special Consideration will be given to the candidates seeking admission in MSHCD with core interest for housing studies and their professional and academic relevance to the masters program.

PhD in Architecture

As per requirements of the HEC of Pakistan and policies of UMT

PhD Criteria

3.0/4.0 CGPA or 60% in annual system

GAT Subject 60%
